How live metal and diamond pricing works on a jewellery website

By Milan Tailor, founder of CodBizz · Updated 21 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer

A jewellery website prices each item as a sum of components: metal weight times the current metal rate, stone cost, making or labour charges and margin. The site stores those inputs, refreshes the rates on a schedule, recalculates every variation and rounds consistently so the price in the catalogue matches the price at checkout. Doing this for thousands of variations is why many jewellers outgrow a standard store.

The price is a formula, not a number

A fixed price per product works for ready-made pieces. For made-to-order and customisable jewellery, the price depends on choices the customer makes, so the site has to calculate it.

  • Metal: weight multiplied by the current rate for the chosen metal and purity.
  • Stones: price by shape, size, quality and carat, either from your own price list or a supplier feed.
  • Making or labour: a fixed amount, a percentage or a rate per gram, depending on how you charge.
  • Wastage and margin: the allowance and mark-up you apply.
  • Tax and currency: added last, in the customer’s market.

Where the live data comes from

  • Metal rates come from a rate feed or from a rate you update yourself, then apply to every item that uses that metal.
  • Diamond and gemstone prices can come from your own stock or from a supplier inventory feed. We integrated Nivoda diamond inventory for JewelMounts.
  • Your own catalogue holds weights, sizes and labour rules per design and variation.
  • Listings can then be pushed to marketplaces. For JewelMounts we sync listings to eBay and Etsy.

Design decisions that prevent pricing bugs

  • Store the inputs, such as weights and rules, not final prices. Recalculate when a rate changes.
  • Recalculate in a background job, so a rate change does not slow the store.
  • Use one pricing function for the catalogue, the cart, the invoice and the admin, so the same item never shows two prices.
  • Fix a rule for rounding and apply it everywhere.
  • Lock the price for a defined time once the customer reaches checkout.
  • Save the rate and the breakdown used on each order, so you can explain any price later.

An example from a live platform: JewelMounts

JewelMounts is a UK B2B jewellery platform for retailers and manufacturers that we build and maintain. It offers thousands of customisable designs with live metal and diamond pricing, plus iOS and Android apps on the same backend. It has been on our retainer for more than four years.

When this becomes a reason to go custom

If you sell a few ready-made pieces at fixed prices, a hosted platform is usually enough. When prices follow live rates across many combinations, or wholesale customers have their own pricing, the pricing logic becomes the heart of the business and is worth owning. Our guide on custom versus Shopify for jewellery covers that decision.

Frequently asked questions

How often should metal rates update on a jewellery site?

It depends on how fast your market moves and how much price risk you can carry. Many stores refresh on a schedule, from every few minutes to hourly, and fix the price once the customer reaches checkout.

Can Shopify handle live metal pricing?

For simple cases it can be done with apps or custom code. With thousands of variations, bespoke orders and wholesale pricing, most jewellers find a custom pricing engine easier to control.

How do you stop the price changing between cart and checkout?

Lock the calculated price for a defined time, for example while the customer completes the order, and save the rate used on the order.

Have you integrated a diamond supplier feed?

Yes. We integrated Nivoda diamond inventory for JewelMounts.
