Custom vs Shopify for a jewellery e-commerce store: how to decide

By Milan Tailor, founder of CodBizz · Updated 20 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer

Choose Shopify or another hosted platform if your catalogue is simple, your prices are fixed and you sell mostly direct to consumers. Choose custom when you need many metal, stone and size combinations priced from live rates, bespoke or made-to-order flows, wholesale accounts with their own pricing, or a link into your production and stock system.

When Shopify is the right call

If this describes you, a hosted platform is usually the better business decision. We will say so plainly on a call.

  • You sell ready-made pieces with fixed prices, mostly to consumers.
  • Your catalogue has a manageable number of variants per product.
  • You want to launch quickly and keep upfront cost low.
  • You are happy to use apps for reviews, email and marketing instead of building them.

When custom starts to pay off

Jewellery has needs that standard stores handle poorly. These are the signs that custom is worth it.

  • Variants explode. One ring can come in many combinations of metal, stone, shape and size, each needing a price and an image.
  • Prices follow rates. Gold, silver, platinum and diamond rates change, and prices should follow them rather than being typed in by hand.
  • Bespoke orders. Customers send a brief, you reply with CAD renders and a quote, and they approve before production.
  • Wholesale and trade accounts. Retailers log in and see their own pricing, markups and order history.
  • Memo (consignment) orders and stock that moves between you and partners.
  • Marketplace and supplier feeds, such as diamond inventory feeds and eBay or Etsy listings.
  • A link to production, stock and invoicing, so orders flow into your workshop or ERP.

A middle path

Some jewellers keep a hosted store for checkout and add a custom pricing engine or portal alongside it through APIs. This cuts risk, because you replace only the part that needs to be special. It is worth asking about before committing to a full rebuild.

What this looks like in practice

We built and maintain two jewellery platforms for a UK client. JewelMounts is a B2B platform for retailers and manufacturers, with thousands of customisable designs of 30–50 variations each, 450+ bespoke types, live metal and diamond pricing, image search, and iOS and Android apps. Fine Diamonds R Us is a luxury consumer store with diamond, gemstone and moissanite price engines, bespoke and ring-size flows, appointments, Stripe and PayPal checkout, and a Google Merchant Center product feed. Both have run on our monthly retainer for 4+ years.

Five questions to decide

If most answers are no, start with Shopify. If three or more are yes, plan for custom, or the hybrid approach above.

  • Do prices need to follow metal and diamond rates automatically?
  • Do you take bespoke orders that need design approval before production?
  • Do wholesale customers need their own login, pricing and order history?
  • Do you need to connect stock, production or invoicing to the store?
  • Will the number of variants keep growing?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom jewellery e-commerce platform cost?

We work on a flat monthly retainer: Starter Partner from $1,200/month, Growth Partner from $2,000/month and Full Tech Team from $3,500/month. The right plan depends on scope, and we recommend one after a free 30-minute discovery call.

Can I start on Shopify and move to custom later?

Yes. Many businesses do. Plan for it by keeping product data clean and in one place, so it can be moved without rework.

Can a custom store sync with eBay, Etsy and diamond feeds?

Yes. Our JewelMounts platform integrates Nivoda diamond inventory and syncs listings to eBay and Etsy using background batch jobs.

Do you work with UK jewellers across time zones?

Yes. We overlap with UK business hours and use async updates in between.
